Description
The Rooftop at Yerba Buena Gardens Play Circle goes by lots of different names. It's the playground right next to Zeum and in the same complex as the Carousel. Whatever you want to call it, it is a great urban playground. It's hard to remember that it is on top of the roof of the Moscone Convention Center. Talk about great use of space!
The basic equipment there consists of two tall tube slides, 1 flat slide, a climbing structure, a sand area with a water source, and a water stream on the other side of the play area. The day we visited there were also hula hoops and a big bouncy ball out. The ground is a blue turf that is very bouncy, so we watched older kids over and over pretend to run as if they were on the moon. They loved the effect.
Rooftop Playground is designed in a pit with benches and ledges on the rim for easy observation. There are also lots of shaded areas around the rim. A short walk away from the play area is the Zeum Carousel. This carousel is over 100 years old and in pristine shape. You get two 4 minute rides for $3.
Next to the playground is the Zeum children's art and technology museum and the Yerba Buena Ice Skating and Bowling Center. All of these attractions are contained in Yerba Buena Gardens which encompasses two square city blocks. It's a great oasis of green and art in the middle of a big city.
