St. James Park is only a few blocks physically from Ryland Park, but worlds away otherwise.
The play area is partially fenced in, but still very close to busy streets and pedestrians. The play structures themselves had graffiti and were clearly well-worn.
I thought the play structure design was really unique. I liked that it stemmed from an idea of "old San Jose". It's just that the old was evident in the faded plexiglass and the dirt and dust covering.
The park is a very urban park boxed in by and bisected by streets. A fun thing is that the VTA trolley stops in the park.
Unfortunately, it's also a homeless hang out and quite a few were by the play area. The morning I was there, I saw a long line of people and I couldn't understand what was going on. When I was leaving I drove by that part and it was a line for sandwich hand-outs.
