Description
Martinez Regional Shoreline is a lovely park with a wide variety of activities. You can hike through the quiet marsh side and enjoy a sunny beach, or you can visit Waterfront Park to the east and participate in a ball game at Joe Dimaggio Field. I didn't know this, but Joe Dimaggio grew up in Martinez, that's why the field is named after him.
The best way to explore the marsh and the sloughs is to hike along the 3 miles of trails through the marsh and along the shoreline. No dogs are allowed in the marsh. We spotted the footprints of some bigger mammal and could see the tunnel it made through the weeds. Very cool.
There's fishing, sunbathing, hiking, boating, a horse arena that's home to the Martinez Horsemen's Association, bocce ball that reflects the city of Martinez's Sicilian heritage, soccer, baseball, three play areas, a skate park, and plain-old picnicking. You'd never get bored here.
Also, the city of Martinez Park and Recreation Department hosts a fireworks show every 4th of July in Waterfront Park which is pretty much the east end of Martinez Regional Shoreline. Fireworks with the Benecia-Martinez Bridge in the background must be pretty spectacular.
