Description

Hayward Regional Shoreline is 1,700 acres of marshes, seasonal wetlands, and trails. It's fantastic for walking, bike riding, and bird watching.

The shoreline was made by levees that were orginally created to make land for salt production. In the 1850's landings were established to ferry passengers and move salt to San Francisco.

Three marshes make up the shoreline: Cogswell Marsh, Oro Loma Marsh, and Hayward Marsh. Some of the marshes have freshwater, some have salt water, and some have brackish water.

The reason we visited was for the bike riding along the five miles of graveled public trails. The five miles are within the park itself, but the San Francisco Bay Trail continues several miles in both directions along the shoreline.

The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Centerrun by HARD is a great place for programs and a good introduction to shoreline animals and environments.
