New Brighton State Beach is a wonderful beach located right off Highway 1 in Capitola. The park also has a campground with more than 100 family, group, and RV spaces. The camping sites are located on a bluff above the beach. The beach is accessible by stairs or from a day parking lot.
New Brighton was once known as China Beach because it was the site of a Chinese fishing village during the 1870's and 1880's. It became a state beach in 1933. Family friendly activities here include camping, hiking, swimming, beach going, and fishing.
It is possible to walk from New Brighton State Beach south to SeaCliff State Beach in Aptos. Seacliff Beach is the beach with the pier and the SS Palo Alto, a concrete tanker sunk at the end of the pier.
When we visited New Brighton Beach there was a lot of seaweed washed up along the shore. We did find a spot several yards from the water that didn't have flies though. Just be careful of the rogue waves - they are big and they will surprise you!
