Mitchell Park in Palo Alto is a great park for kids, adults, family gatherings, play groups, and even dogs. At 21 acres it has something for everyone. Best of all, it has a wonderful splash pad area for kids.
The park features two children’s play areas, a splash pad, a quarter-mile walking path, seven lighted tennis courts, four handball courts, picnic areas with barbeques, two paddle tennis courts, a big lawn area, horseshoe pits, a fenced dog run, and two public art sculptures.
The play areas are very cool. Both the little kid play area and big kid play area have updated play structures. There is also a very cool sand play area with tunnels and concrete animals to climb on. The splash pad area is quite big with several fountains and sprays. It is next to the little kid play area, sand play area, and bathrooms.
Mitchell Park first opened in 1957 as a multi-use park for people of all ages. At the time, it received national and international attention for its design. In the 1990's it underwent a major upgrade. Mitchell Park is named for J. Pearce Mitchell, a prominent Palo Alto politician.
