Description
Memorial Park is a community park next to the Veteran's Hall and across the street from Bancroft Middle School. The play areas are fairly new and great to play in.
Both play areas are fenced with swinging gates. They are side by side. The tot area features a play train for climbing around on as well as a small play structure with a tunnel and slide. Imaginative kids could spend a long time here.
The play structure for ages 5-12 is bigger with one of the tallest, fastest slides I have seen. It, too, has a tunnel and features a rolling log. The swings for both tots and bigger kids are in the bigger kids play area.
There is a smaller, unfenced play area on the other end of the parking lot with an older play structure. The park has a covered picnic area and a good amount of shade.
One nice benefit to the park is its proximity to the San Leandro Main Library. It's only one block down Callan Ave. Many parents walk or drive to the park after story times on Wednesday mornings for playtime.
Two drawbacks to the park are that homeless people hang out on the benches outside of the play area and the middle school kids tend to take over the play areas when they are not in school. The park outside the play area gets dirty with trash and the middle school kids yell at each other and sometimes use foul language. Twice when I was there with my kids I asked them to stop and be mindful of younger kids, but the third time I gave up and left.
