McKinley Park near downtown Sacramento is a gem! I was so impressed with it. In addition to an awesome wooden adventure playground, there is a serene lagoon with two fountains and a big, beautiful rose garden.
The Adventure Playground named "Kids Play McKinley" was built over four days by the community in 1994. It is great. Most of the tot play area is in shade since they designed the play area around existing trees. In fact, a tree is in the center of the sand pit. When I visited, there was fresh, new tanbark on the ground. And the whole play area has lots of benches built into it, so supervision is very easy.
There are six slides, 4 tot swings, 3 big kid swings, 1 handicapped swing (although its placement- farthest from the pathway- doesn't make much sense), a zip line, and a tire swing.
The park itself has a swimming pool next to the play area, a basketball court, a ball field, four tennis courts, walking paths through and around the park, lots of horseshoe pits, picnic areas and the lagoon, complete with ducks, geese, and fountains. McKinley encompasses an entire city block so lots of people use the sidewalk and jogging path around the park for exercise. It is set in a nice neighborhood.
At one corner of the park is the McKinley Park Rose Garden. What a beautiful rose garden. Definitely worth a stroll through the iron trellises to enjoy the beauty and labors of volunteers.
