Description
Temescal is a convenient urban oasis, popular for swimming, fishing, sunbathing, and picnicking. It is located next to the junction of Highways 24 and 13 in Oakland. Sitting on the sandy beach, you would never know that major Bay Area freeways are right next to the park.
Temescal opened to the public in 1936 as one of the District's first three parks. It was originally constructed as a storage lake for drinking water. The handsome stone building overlooking the lake was constructed by Works Progress Administration crews in 1940.
The swim area is open spring through fall, with lifeguards on duty during posted periods. Swimming is permitted only in the designated swim area. There are several fishing piers along the lake. Fishing at Lake Temescal requires a current California Fishing License with stamps and an EBRPD Daily Fishing Access Permit for all fishermen aged 16 and older.
