Description
Hoover Dam is a National Historic Landmark and has been designated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders. During the Depression thousands of men came to Black Canyon for the promise of work. In less than 5 years they built the largest dam of its time. Even today, Hoover Dam still stands as a world-renowned structure.
The structure itself is truly impressive. Before 9/11 the general public tours were much more extensive. I have a picture of myself at the bottom of the dam before 9/11looking up. The top of the dam barely fits in the picture!
Since 1937, the Bureau of Reclamation has taken tourists through the Hoover Dam and its power plant.. Today, close to 1,000,000 visitors take the tour and millions more drive across the dam each year.
