Hillcrest Community Park is a big park at 26 acres. It has a wonderful children's playground called Matteo's Dream. It also has ball fields for baseball and soccer, a model airplane field, picnic areas, a Korean War Memorial, and a creek which runs through the park.
Matteo's Dream is a special playground where children who cannot walk, see or hear can play safely alongside children who can. This playground was constructed in 2007 by over 2,000 volunteers. It's named for Matteo who uses a wheelchair and is blind.
The playground has lots of opportunities for imaginative play and lots of movement related structures for actions like swaying and jumping. There is a separate tot lot and a water mister. Benches surround the play area and the main play structure is wide enough for wheelchair access. It is big, bright and beautiful. Amazing what can be accomplished when a community comes together.
Word of caution: the playground is covered in rubberized turf and there is little shade over the playground. Concord gets hot in the summer. So even though there is a mister, be sure to keep kids hydrated on those hot summer days.
