I don't normally include zoos on my website, but Happy Hollow Park and Zoo strikes me as 1/2 amusement park and 1/2 zoo. Both are fantastic, especially after the major renovations completed in March of 2010.
Happy Hollow Park and Zoo sits on 16 acres of land in Kelley Park. The first thing that strikes you is the entrance to the park and zoo. It is as bright and colorful as the park is itself. Upon entering you can head left to most of the rides and playgrounds or head right to the zoo portion.
There is a huge, fantastic playground called Redwood Lookout, a petting zoo, a Lemur Woods Exhibit where children can play like a lemur, a puppet theater, a new ride area called Giggle Grove, and the perennially popular Family Rides Area. And all of these are just a portion of the park!
Let's not forget the zoo portion with 19 mammals, 3 reptiles, and 10 birds on display. It's small enough that little feet won't get tired, yet varied enough where adult minds won't get bored.
The New Happy Hollow combines innovative green architecture with whimsical fun and is Gold Certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program.
Green architecture with whimsical fun with free rides (you only pay one admission to the park and zoo) equals a great day in my book.
