Description

Grape Day Park is an interesting place. It's a mixture of things. From our own experience and from reading reviews online, I'd have to say it's primarily a homeless hang-out. Second, it's a historic park, and third it has a small, but very unique play area.

I agree with what one person said online, " It's [The homeless situation] is really unfortunate, too, because this park is really pretty". Even though it was raining the day we were there, Grape Day Park still looked pretty and was mostly clean, except where the homeless people were.

Grape Day Park is Escondido's oldest park. Today it is a registered landmark and home to a Santa Fe Railroad Depot, a blacksmith shop, an early 1900's working barn, and other historic buildings, museums, and monuments. We really loved the San Diego Children's Discovery Museum, but it's now in a new, bigger and better location across North Broadway from the play area.

The play area is very whimsical. It consists of a grapevine climbing structure and a slide decorated with giant purple grapes. It's a perfect tribute to Escondido's agricultural history.

In addition to the play area and historic park, there are horseshoe pits, picnic tables, and the James A. Stone Memorial Swimming Pool.
