Description
Fort Point is a beautiful fort just under the south side of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was constructed between 1850 and 1860 with the intention of protecting San Francisco Bay and by extension, the entire Pacific coast. The fort was first manned with guns at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. Hundreds of soldiers were stationed there, far from the Confederate and Union battles. The men spent their days drilling, practicing artillery shots, doing maintenance, and undergoing inspections. Even though the fort was prepared for attack, its guns were never fired in defense.
Today the fort is open three days a week, Friday through Sunday. Its beautifully arched casemates display the art of the master brick mason from the Civil War period. It is a wonderful historical place to visit after or before a walk at Crissy Field or through the Presidio. Since it's at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge be sure to bring your camera and jacket.
