The James V. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is a fantastic place. I was amazed at how close we could get to marine life. My children were able to observe, examine, and touch sea life that they previously had only see in tanks. They still remember this awesome adventure to this day.
The most important thing to do when planning a trip to the reserve is to consult the tide charts ahead of time. Low tide is the best time to come. Other important factors to consider are the weather and the temperament of your children. Foul, cold weather is no fun to be out in, especially for children. Also, children who are more active and younger may not appreciate the care needed to tread the rocks. One wrong footstep could mean death for the very animals the reserve was created to protect.
The reserve rules are simple: Walk carefully, do not move animals, do not take anything from the reserve, and don't disturb marine mammals such as harbor seals who often seek refuge here to birth and raise their young.
