Description
Depot Park in Sonoma is located about 1/2 mile north of the town square. It is a older shaded park with ball fields, a wonderful train museum and three train cars including a caboose. Depot Park is the city of Sonoma's second largest park after Plaza Park in the town square.
The highlight of the park for us was the train museum and train. If the museum is open, be sure to go on in and ask if they will open the caboose for you. The people who were running it the day we visited were older and clearly delighted in watching the kids face light up when they rang the bell or discovered a new cubby hole. The museum is small, but packed with great artifacts and lots of good information about the history of the railroads in Sonoma County. There a quite a few hands-on exhibits for kids too. Getting to explore the caboose was a very special treat for us.
Depot Park has a only one play structure and it is clearly for the ages 2-5 set. However, there are lots of picnic benches, a sand volleyball court, a bocce ball court, a petanque court, a gazebo, and barbecues. We saw a few families enjoying birthday party barbecues while we were there.
