Description

Columbia is one of California's finest relics of the gold rush era. The town of Columbia has survived over 150 years when many other settlements disappeared due to fire, vandalism and time. In 1945 the California State Legislature made the site a State Historic Park in order to preserve a typical Gold Rush town, an example of one of the most colorful eras in American history.

Columbia's old Gold Rush-era business district has been preserved with shops, restaurants and two hotels. Visitors have the chance to time-travel to the 1850s, imagining life when gold miners rubbed shoulders with businessmen and the other residents in Columbia. There are opportunities to ride a 100 year-old stagecoach, pan for gold, and explore the real working businesses of Columbia.

Don't forget to take a walk to the two-story brick school house and cemetery overlooking town and hike the one-mile nature trail where mule deer and wild flowers can be seen in the spring and early summer. Beware that a field trip to Columbia is a highlight for many of California's fourth graders since at that grade they study California history in depth. During the school year you a likely to encounter many school groups. And if you have a school age child this place really is a great way to make California's history come alive for them.
