Lake Anza in Tilden Park is a favorite getaway from the fog that envelopes Berkeley. It has a beautiful sand beach and a guarded swim area during the summer.
There is a roped off area for swimming that consists of three sections. A shallow wading section is nearest the shore, a deep water play area is next, and furthest from the shore is a lap swim lane. During the swim season when lifeguards are not on duty, swimming at your own risk is allowed within the roped-off area only.
There are bath houses for changing at the lake and restrooms. There's also a concession stand that sells drinks, hot dogs, ice cream and the typical beach fare.
We like Lake Anza, especially for the good sand and mostly good weather in the afternoon. It's a great beach because it gets complete sun until the late afternoon and it's protected from the wind.
Be sure to check the East Bay Regional Park District's website before going to make sure the lake is open.
